When did ss begin?
How did it start? Who was in ss at the beginning? As a gaming clan/team,
what was played? How often? Where did we play and under what call
sign? These and many other questions will be answered to give you,
the reader, a sense... a feel for our team's humble beginnings.
Why? Because if
we forget about our past, how well can we shape the future?
I. In the beginning...

has its origins roughly about November 1996. I, sirdark, was one of
about four players that found themselves playing FFA (free for all)
on Net Quake servers. We were NOT known as SS at this time. We were
just a group of players.

The Technology:
What you have to understand is that during 1996, the most common form
of internet connection was dial up modems. Many people had 486 PCs
with 14.4K modems. The technology was such that 28K modems where just
becoming the standard. People had begun upgrading to 56k modems. The
common Operating Systems (OS) where Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 was
about 1 year old. Akron, Ohio (per Time Warner) had been ground zero
for beta testing High Speed modem technology. They first launched
a pilot program offering this service in October 1996 to a select
area.
